The Products

We wrote this product for housing associations. We started by looking at three key publications all produced under the IGP banner - Forum for the Future's "Social Housing and Sustainability" papers (the bIGPicture), Sustainable Homes' "Foundations for the Future", and the European Institute for Urban Affairs' "Toolkit of Sustainability Indicators". From there we looked at other publications and tools, many of which are included in this toolbox. We quickly became overwhelmed by choice! In order to keep the product manageable we decided to include mainly products that were specifically related to housing associations. All of the products have been grouped in "tool types" to help you see at a glance how each product can help you. The tool types are:

System

A system is a tool which contains the things you need to take action. It prompts you to collect and record data (electronically or on paper) and takes you from a defined starting point to one or more specific outputs. Systems may be computer based or paper based. They are normally self-contained, i.e. you need to use the system as it is, but some have been designed to link with other products.
Guide

Guides give you a stepped approach (at various levels of detail) to achieving an end. Most give you background information, describe the options you can take and describe the methods by which you choose. They usually allow more flexibility than systems, but you may need to design your own systems for gathering data, controlling projects, etc.

Reference Reference materials are usually reports and case studies that provide you with more information about a subject. They may give you ideas from which to develop your own projects. Some reference material gives you specific subject data on which you can base decisions (e.g. the Green Guide to Housing Specification).
Network A network is formed by a number of people who are interested in the same topic, and provides support for the people in the network by sharing ideas, information and experience.
